Dear friends and colleagues of the CALESA Project,
Today is a profoundly sad day for all of us.
In the morning of February 27, Friday, we received the news of the passing of José María Hofileña, Dean of the Ateneo de Manila University School of Law and one of the strongest supporters of the CALESA Project, as well as of all the initiatives we have been promoting for years to revitalize the ties between the legal communities of Spain and the Philippines.
Joey has been — and will continue to be — for all of us a true friend: loyal, generous, helpful, simple, and humble, yet at the same time endowed with that greatness and nobility that only those who have cultivated a deep humanity possess. He always had wise, prudent, and encouraging words in every challenge we faced together.
In the most difficult moments, he demonstrated his integrity without reservation. He supported Maria Ressa and firmly defended human rights from Ateneo, even when doing so required courage. Many of us remember that afternoon when the School of Law was filled with lit candles — a symbol of his conviction that dignity and humanity must never be abandoned.
In this time of sorrow, I ask you to say a prayer for him. In tribute to what his life has meant to all of us; in gratitude for how much we have been enriched by walking alongside him; and in recognition that he has been an exemplary model, both in his professional career and in his inner life, which was filled with goodness and beauty.
Today, we take comfort in thinking that a good angel watches over us and that, from eternal light, he looks upon us with affection and love.

Estimados amigos y compañeros del Proyecto CALESA,
Hoy es un día profundamente triste para todos nosotros. Esta madrugada, viernes 27 de febrero, hemos recibido la noticia del fallecimiento de José María Hofileña, Decano de la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad Ateneo de Manila y uno de los más firmes valedores del Proyecto CALESA, así como de todas las iniciativas que, desde hace años, venimos impulsando para revitalizar los vínculos entre las comunidades jurídicas de España y Filipinas.
Joey ha sido —y seguirá siendo— para todos nosotros un verdadero amigo: leal, generoso, servicial, sencillo y humilde, pero al mismo tiempo dotado de esa grandeza y señorío que solo poseen quienes han sabido cultivar una profunda calidad humana. Siempre tuvo palabras sensatas, prudentes y alentadoras en cada una de las vicisitudes que hemos afrontado juntos.
En los momentos más difíciles demostró su integridad sin reservas. Apoyó a Maria Ressa y defendió con firmeza los derechos humanos desde Ateneo, incluso cuando ello exigía valentía. Muchos recordamos aquella tarde en la que la Facultad de Derecho se llenó de velas encendidas, símbolo de su convicción de que la dignidad y la humanidad nunca deben abandonarnos.
En estos momentos de dolor, os pido una oración por él. En homenaje a lo que su vida ha significado para todos nosotros; en agradecimiento por cuanto nos ha enriquecido compartir camino con él; y en reconocimiento de que ha sido un modelo ejemplar, tanto en su trayectoria profesional como en su vida interior, llena de bondad y belleza.
Hoy nos consuela pensar que un ángel bueno vela por nosotros y que, desde la luz eterna, nos contempla con cariño y amor.
José María, Joey, permanecerás con nosotros para siempre.
