One of the main objectives of the European Union regarding higher
education is to incorporate gender equality into educational policies.
Gender mainstreaming has been embraced internationally as a strategy
towards realising gender equality. It involves the integration of a gender
perspective into the higher education with a view to promoting equality
between women and men, and combating discrimination.
CALESA as a Capacity Building Project between European and Philippine
institutions is not alien to this European objective. In fact, on the
contrary, CALESA is a project with a strong gender perspective. This means
that this will promote the achievement of objectives related to equality
and non-discrimination against women. To ensure that these are met, the
gender equality committee has been set up. Thus, from this it will be
- That the training seminars in the Philippines incorporate gender equality issues.
- That Philippine educational institutions incorporate subjects that address content related to gender equality
- That legal research with a gender perspective be promoted
- That activities (seminars, congresses, classes, book presentations, etc.) related to gender equality are promoted in the participating institutions.
Education in gender equality at all levels is essential to change society and make it fairer. As the European institute for Gender equality says in their website “Education is a life-long process and has a crucial role in the economic and social development of Europe. From pre-school to adult education, women and men continue to encounter gender stereotypes and discrimination that can have a profound impact on their educational choices and career paths. Dismantling these barriers would put an end to education segregation by gender.“
